Caminata Corta – A Short Walk

Empezamos nuestra aventura en el centro de ecoturismo Valle Hermoso, una cabaña de troncos única en Tierra del Fuego. Después de ver los mapas topográficos de esta región y una breve explicación de cómo será el recorrido comenzamos el trekking a través de un bosque cerrado de lengas centenarias. Esta etapa tiene una duración de una hora aprox. y se superan los 400 metros de desnivel alcanzando el límite de vegetación. Al salir del bosque continuamos hasta el Mirador de los Cóndores donde concluye la segunda etapa a los 750 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Desde aquí las vistas son fantásticas. Se pueden ver dos valles diferentes bajo nuestros pies y solo magníficos picos a nuestro alrededor.
Sobre una de las laderas hay una lengua de nieve eterna. Nuestro parque de juegos! Contamos con culipatines y raquetas. Vamos a divertirnos! Aquí nos podemos tomar una hora para un té, café, mate y muchísimas posibilidades para tomar fotografías. En una hora estaremos de regreso en la calidez de la cabaña de Valle Hermoso donde una fondue de chocolate nos estará esperando.

The adventure starts in Valle Hermoso Ecotourism centre, 15 km outside of the city of Ushuaia, a beautiful and unique wooden cabin. After taking a look on geographical maps of the region, and a short explication of how the trip will be, the trekking starts trough a wild lenga forest just across the ruta 3. This first part of the hike takes about 1 hour and brings us to the limit of the vegetation 600 mts above sea level. Leaving the forest, we keep climbing until we reach the “Condor Viewpoint”, only 800 m further but 750 mts above sea level. From here the views are amazing. We can see 2 different valleys under our feet and nothing but magnificent peaks around us.
On 1 of the slopes lays a big patch of snow. Our playground! There are mini-sledges and snowshoes available. Let’s have fun! Here we also take the time to have some tea, coffee, mate and plenty of possibilities to take pictures. After 1 hour of playing around in the snow at these magical surroundings we head down again. In 1h we are back in the warmth of Valle Hermoso cabin where a chocolate fondue awaits us.

Caminata Larga – A Long Walk

Localizado en un ambiente prístino a solo 26 km desde Ushuaia y 1400 metros sobre el nivel del mar encontramos el Cerro Alvear, cuyas características lo hacen uno de los más emblemáticos de la región. El Cerro Alvear tiene una de las cumbres más importantes de la isla, una cima casi plana con nieves eternas y un hermoso ambiente natural. El glaciar localizado sobre su cara este da origen al arroyo Las Cotorras de belleza indescriptible así también como sus alrededores. Aunque está cerca de la ciudad, es un lugar increíblemente salvaje y solitario, lo que trae más de una sorpresa durante cada excursión.

Luego descendemos a través de un terreno rocoso cubierto de lajas hasta llegar a un pequeño lago llamado Laguna Faraon, donde somos recompensados con una vista panorámica del Glaciar Alvear. Luego de una pequeña parada nos dirigimos montaña arriba a través de un valle encajonado que nos conduce al lago del glaciar. Este valle nos protegerá del viento. En este hermoso lago turquesa se pueden disfrutar espléndidas vistas del glaciar o hacer una pequeña caminata sobre hielo utilizando raquetas o crampones. Luego de ascender por 30 minutos se puede tener una vista completa hacia el Lago Fagnano.
Luego de almorzar en este entorno mágico, emprendemos el regreso. En dos horas estaremos de regreso en la calidez de la cabaña de Valle Hermoso donde nos estarán esperando una fondue de chocolate.

Located in an unspoiled environment at only 26 km from Ushuaia and 1400 meters above sea level we can find the Alvear Mountain, whose characteristics make it one of the most emblematic of the region. The Alvear Mountain has one of the most important summits of the island, an almost flat top with eternal snow and a beautiful natural environment. The glacier located on its eastern side gives origin to the Cotorras River , of indescribable beauty as well as its surroundings. Although it is close to the city, this is an incredibly wild and lonely place, which keeps more than one surprise in each excursion.

Then we come down trough a rocky terrain covered with gravel until we reach a little lake called Laguna Faraon were we are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Alvear glacier. After a short stop we head uphill through the last valley that brings us to the glacier lake. This valley protects us from the wind. At this beautiful turquoise lake we can enjoy splendid views on the glacier or go for a short walk on the ice using crampons or snowshoes. After walking uphill for 30 min, we can see all the way towards Lago Fagnano.
After having lunch at these magical surroundings we head down again. In 2h we are back in the warmth of Valle Hermoso cabin where a chocolate fondue awaits us.
